Sharjah Ports, Customs and Free Zones Authority Participates in the Ninth Regional Conference on Intellectual Property Crimes

The Ninth Regional Conference on Intellectual Property  Crimes in the Middle East and North Africa kicked off under the motto " Learning from the Pandemic - IP Rights- Protection and Enforcement best Practices" was kicked off November 16 2020. The Deputy Chief of Police and Public Security in Dubai, Honorary President of the Emirates Intellectual Property Association, Lieutenant General Dhahi Khalfan Tamim attended the virtual conference.

The Conference which lasted for 2 days was organized by the UAE Intellectual Property Association (EIPA), the International Criminal Police Organization(INTERPOL), UAE Ministry of Justice, Dubai Customs, Trademark Owners Council with participation of several Arab, Regional and International Entities.   

The participation of the Sharjah Ports, Customs and Free Zones Authority in the virtual conference came upon the invitation of Dubai Customs. On November 17 2020  the session allocated to discuss Sharjah Customs paper was presented by Eman Ali Al Salman, Head of Intellectual Property Section ( IP Department Sharjah Customs). She addressed  the impact of Covid- 19 pandemic on the activities of Ports and Customs. The session was headed by Mahbooba Baqer, Head of Awareness and Education Section, - IPR Department - Dubai Customs.

 Al Salman said: " Our participation in the conference is a reflection to the Authority's commitment to protect the  IP rights of producers and creative thinkers in different fields by combating the smuggling of counterfeit and fake goods and products and all that threatens public health and safety of the local community or violates producers and trademark owners’ rights."

" I addressed the role of Sharjah Customs during the time of Covid-19 pandemic including Sharjah Customs procedures which are aiming at maintaining the continuity of the necessary supply chains and community protection. The study also focused on customs inspection procedures and adoption a policy of protecting customs inspectors by running periodic medical test necessary to ascertain that they are virus free. Procedures of IP Department were done remotely in order to preserve and maintain the public health of the customers and employees. Also I highlighted the conclusions of the aftermath  pandemic", she concluded.
